It is with great pleasure that we invite you to attend the 2018 Annual Property Funds Industry Forum. The Forum is one of the longest running annual events in the Australian property industry and attracts delegates and speakers of the highest calibre to provide an informed and well considered opinion on the sector.

Over the years, the Forum has attracted a diverse set of delegates ranging from some of Australia’s largest property funds to the smaller funds, thus creating an environment for forming new relationships, networking with industry leaders and decision makers. The Forum sessions are intended to pave the way for decision making into the future rather than dwell on past events.

In this context, the theme for this year’s event is “Surviving the asset bubble contagion”. Changes impacting the sector are multi-fold: innovation through new technology; political unrest and reshaping of cross border trade; and the threat of a rising discount rate that plays no favourite to any asset class. Much like the Internet of Things, the Risk of Things is a much vaunted concept to explore.

This year’s program is being designed to specifically provide delegates with some solutions to navigate through this unusual investment environment. Work, rest and network with key players from the property funds industry.

Jonathan Pain
Director: JP Consulting NSW Pty Ltd

It is with much excitement that we welcome back (by popular demand) Jonathan Pain as our 2018 Keynote Speaker. Jonathan captivated last years delegates with his discussion on The New Political and Economic Reality and we look forward to his insights on this years’ theme “Surviving the asset bubble contagion”.

Jonathan Pain is a Director of JP Consulting NSW Pty Ltd and has 33 years of international investment experience having led investment teams in London, Bahrain and Australia. 

Jonathan holds a joint honours degree in Economics and Politics from Keele University and a Masters degree in Finance from Exeter University.

He is the author and publisher of a widely read investment newsletter, TheWeeklyPain Report. Well known for his independent and often contrarian views, Jonathan is a regular guest on CNBC TV and speaks at conferences and seminars all around the world.

Jonathan is also an ‘associate’ of China Matters. Since 2003, Jonathan has repeatedly said that the most significant and defining economic phenomenon of our lifetime is the rise of the Asian middle classes.

In numerous speeches and articles in 2006 Jonathan highlighted the unsustainable levels of debt and the housing bubble in America, and respected commentators such as Alan Kohler have acknowledged his warnings of that impending crisis. More recently in one of his most controversial and contrarian calls he predicted Donald Trump would win the US election.

Having been born in South Africa and lived in Lesotho, Swaziland, England and Bahrain, Jonathan now calls Australia home.


Brendan Ivers
Partner: McMahon Clarke

Brendan is independently recognised as a 'leading lawyer' (Chambers Asia Pacific Guide 2014 – 2017) in the field of investment funds, and acts for fund managers in a wide range of commercial transactions. His work includes structuring and advising on property funds (wholesale and retail), preparing product disclosure statements/offer documents, joint venture agreements and other commercial agreements in relation to complex acquisition and funding arrangements, the application of the Corporations Act and ASIC regulatory policy. Brendan assists both established fund managers and new participants in the industry.

Patrick McGrath
Political Commentator

Patrick is a former political advisor to both state and federal politicians, a government relations consultant and most recently the Head of Enterprise Sales at Expert360.

Since the last time Patrick presented at this conference in 2015, Australia has changed Prime Ministers, the UK voted to leave the European Union, Donald Trump became President of the United States and North Korea's ongoing threats suddenly became real. On a local front NSW has changed Premiers and South Australia ran out of power.

Patrick looks forward to discussing what has occurred over the last two years and speculating as to what the next 12 months have in store.

Nick Thomson
Senior Adviser - Mergers & Acquisitions: AquAsia

Nick has over a decade of banking experience in financial advisory, equity capital markets, restructuring and mergers and acquisitions.

Prior to joining Aquasia in 2015, Nick was most recently Head of Investment Banking for CIMB Australia, with responsibility for origination of advisory assignments and management of a team of investment banking professionals.

Nick has also worked at UBS AG Australia and JPMorgan Australia and has undertaken a number of significant Real Estate transactions and financial restructuring assignments. Nick has a Master of Economics from Sydney University and is a graduate of the INSEAD Management Program.

Paul Mirams
Partner: Korda Mentha

Paul brings a relaxed, inclusive mindset and a results-orientated focus, which often challenges the status quo when solving clients’ problems.

Starting his professional life as a chartered accountant, Paul has since accumulated nearly 25 years in the real estate industry with some of the sector’s most recognisable companies.

At KordaMentha, Paul has, for nearly 10 years, led the NSW real estate practice that has a well-established reputation for solving our clients’ most challenging real estate problems.

Nicholas Smedley
Managing Director: Steller Property Group

Nicholas has an impressive background in corporate finance, having worked for internationally respected brands including KPMG and UBS in both the Australian and Hong Kong markets. A specialist in finance structuring and financial modelling, his passion for residential property saw him co-found Steller in 2006 with a view to enhancing Melbourne’s streetscapes and creating exciting new communities.

Nicholas Capp
CEO/Managing Director: Primary Markets


Divisional CEO with 20+ years of experience in general management, operations and strategic relationship management across multinational (Linfox – President Retail Asia Pacific) and start-up organisations across Asia Pacific.

Track record in executing large scale partnerships, growing revenues and improving profitability, building and implementing collaborative strategic plans, developing high performance teams, completing major change and improvement programs and operational start-ups.

Until joining PrimaryMarkets, Strategic Advisor/Program Lead for Telstra Retail and Senior Advisor to Australian Rugby Union.


Felicity Ambler
Managing Director: Gravitas Group

Felicity Ambler, Managing Director founded Gravitas Group, a specialist Real Asset Capital Placement and Advisory business.

Felicity joined the real asset investment industry in 2000 and has 18 years real asset investment management experience from Australia, Europe, the UK and UAE. Following six years with Jones Lang LaSalle working within the Capital Markets business domestically and internationally, and an extensive in-house capital raising career at leading investment managers MaxCap Group and APN Property in Australia, and Corestate Capital and Aviva Investors in London, Felicity recognised a need to provide independent, specialist real asset debt and equity capital placement and advisory.

Felicity holds a Bachelor of Commerce and the Investment Management Certificate.


Miranda Lie
Director, Institutional Real Estate: CBA


Miranda Lie has over eleven years’ experience in banking across the real estate, industrials and emerging companies sectors. Miranda currently manages the Commonwealth Bank of Australia’s relationship with institutional real estate clients including listed and unlisted funds, developers, superannuation funds, high net worth individuals and offshore investors. She works with clients across capital management and balance sheet optimisation, acquisition funding and refinancing strategies; overseeing the execution of a wide range of transactions including lending, project finance, debt capital markets, risk management, trade finance and cash management.

Prior to joining the Commonwealth Bank of Australia in 2012, Miranda was part of the Real Estate Investment Banking team at Goldman Sachs, Australia.

Miranda holds Masters of Commerce and Bachelor of Science (Honours, University Medal) degrees from the University of Sydney.


Gavin Duane
Director: Location IQ

Since 1993, Gavin has provided independent advice in the fields of market analysis and strategic research for a wide range of clients in the retail, residential, commercial, industrial and shopping centre industries. Gavin founded Location IQ in January 2009 and the company has grown to employ over 10 staff and undertaken projects for major property developers such as The GPT Group, Lend Lease, Mirvac, AMP and Stockland as well as major retailers such as Woolworths.

Gavin regularly appears as an independent expert in state planning courts and tribunals, on matters relating to economic impact assessments, property market conditions and definitions, industry trends, market shares, consumer behaviour and their implications.

Chris Key
Managing Director: Greystar AsiaPac

As Managing Director for Greystar’s Australian business, Chris is leading the establishment and growth of the Greystar Australia platform. Chris is responsible for implementing the strategic plan for the platform across a variety of key components including investment strategy, capital relationships, operational management, acquisitions and development activities. Prior to joining Greystar, Chris has held roles as Head of Corporate Finance for Asia Pacific at JLL and as a Managing Director at Macquarie Capital, as well as roles at Goldman Sachs and AMP Capital. He has Bachelor of Business degrees in both Property and Banking & Finance from the University of South Australia.

Ian Knox
Co-founder and Chairman: Paragem

Before establishing the Paragem AFSL, Ian co-founded Paragem Dealer Services, a leader in the provision of back-office support to over 200 AFSLs. He has a proven background in establishing and creating shareholder wealth over 25 years. His career includes being a director of the Financial Services Council (previously the Investment & Financial Services Association), experience as a non-executive and executive director of publicly listed companies, and chairmanship of several businesses.

He had a highly successful management period as the CEO of Sealcorp Holdings, Deputy Managing Director of Westpac Investment Management and CEO of Lend Lease Investment Services. Ian has a successful track record in strategy planning and execution within the wealth management industry and is a well-regarded thought leader on industry direction. He is a passionate consumer advocate and assists with facilitation and strategy planning with some of Australia’s leading funds management and financial services firms.

Hamish MacDonald
Director - Head of Real Estate Australia: BlackRock

Hamish is responsible for the management of BlackRock's Australian real estate operations and oversees the real estate investment management activities in Australia. He is a member of the APAC Real Estate Management Committee.

Mr. MacDonald's service with the firm dates back to 2007, including his years with MGPA, which was acquired by BlackRock in 2013. He joined MGPA's London office where he was Head of Acquisitions in the UK. Prior to joining MGPA, Mr. MacDonald was a portfolio manager with a pan-European real estate fund manager managing two UK real estate pension funds. Mr. MacDonald has over 19 years of experience in real estate having specialised in acquisitions and asset and development, and fund management. He began his career in Sydney where he was a Development Manager at the Mirvac Group and a Commercial Advisor at Colliers International.

Mr. MacDonald has a BComm. with majors in Economics and Finance from the University of Sydney and is a Member of the Global Investment Group for the Property Council of Australia.

Tim Stringer
Chief Investment Officer: International Property Funds Management

Tim Stringer joined IPFM in February 2018 as Chief Investment Officer. Tim has responsibility for all aspects of the investment function of IPFM, including development and execution of investment strategy and oversight of the entire investment process including research and analysis, deal origination and execution of capital transactions, developments, asset management and portfolio management including capital management.

Tim has over 30 years’ of experience in the commercial property industry. He is a seasoned investment professional having held senior executive roles in fund management, portfolio management and advisory with Colonial First State Global Asset Management Property (CFSGAM), AMP Capital and Frontier Advisors. At CFSGAM Property, Tim served as the Chief Executive Officer and Head of Unlisted Property where he led a division of over 40 investment professionals managing 12 property funds with FUM of over $6 billion. During this time, Tim implemented a restructure of the team and his leadership saw investment performance improved significantly with the proportion of funds outperforming their investment benchmarks increasing from 60% to 100%. Prior to this, Tim spent 15 years’ with AMP Capital, initially as a National Valuations Manager for 6 years’ before taking on the role of Fund Manager of AMP’s flagship unlisted property fund, the Australian Core Property Portfolio which grew to $5 billion and delivered strong performance. Tim also held the role of Fund Manager for the AMP Global Direct Property Fund. Most recently, Tim was a Principal Consultant and Head of Property at Frontier Advisors where he led a team of consultants and researchers. He provided consulting advice to Frontier’s clients and led the development of an international real estate configuration and strategy for a range of institutional investors.

Tim Slattery
Chief Executive Officer: APN Property Group

Tim has 14 years’ experience across real estate investment management, investment banking with Goldman Sachs and corporate law with Herbert Smith Freehills including 9 years with APN.

Tim has worked on mergers, acquisitions and financing transactions worth A$8 billion within Australia and internationally including a number of significant commercial real estate transactions across, retail, office, industrial and healthcare including in recent years the listing on ASX of Industria REIT and Convenience Retail REIT with over A$800 million in assets.

He has led both private and public capital raising projects for real estate investments and successfully completed asset acquisitions, sales and asset management projects and the launch of new investment funds.

Tim leads APN’s team and is responsible for setting and implementing APN’s strategy and growth objectives, leading APN’s team and the investment performance of APN’s investment products and the company itself.

David Henry
Director-Property: Wingate Group


David has over 20 years’ experience in the property industry directly and structured property finance, syndication and equity investment.

Based in our Melbourne office David is responsible for origination, appraisal and management of individual investments the group makes across the capital structure be it senior debt, structured finance or equity investment.

Having worked in direct property and syndication David has a clear sense of the needs of developers, investors and property owners, he places emphasis on developing long term, enduring relationships.


Tony Moussa
Director: KPMG Corporate Finance

Tony has over 25 years of experience gained across all aspects of investment banking, corporate advisory, global markets, debt and equity products, securitisation, leveraged finance and corporate restructuring, with a particular focus on the real estate sector. He has worked for domestic and global investment banks, as well as private equity firms, including ANZ, Deutsche Bank and Champ - and is currently a senior member of KPMG’s Corporate Finance business where he is focussed on assisting predominantly private real estate groups secure non-bank debt funding from a range of local and offshore institutional debt providers, and is currently arranging over $1.5bn of real estate financings in the market.
